All applicants wishing to apply for an SFP must complete the main foundation programme application form on Oriel during the national application window.
The SFP pathways detailed below do not replace the main application process.
Pathway 1: One-third of the SFP in England will be allocated to medical school students in England, who will be selected by their medical school via a locally defined process.
Pathway 2: The remaining two-thirds of the SFP will be allocated to eligible applicants via Preference Informed Allocation (PIA). Individuals can preference SFP at the group stage, after allocation to a foundation school in England.
More info on recruitment to SFP in England can be found here.

Why Severn?
The University of Bristol offers world-class research opportunities, linked to training in a number of excellent clinical teams. The range of programmes and the quality of research teams make the Severn Specialised Foundation Programmes (SFPs) stand out.
The Programmes
The Severn Foundation School and the University of Bristol offer 15 Specialised Foundation Programmes. Our research opportunities are unbundled from the clinical rotations allowing successful applicants to competitively select the most suitable combination of research area and clinical rotation. There are a wide variety of research opportunities encompassing a range of academic subjects. Thus the SFPs in Severn offer a great opportunity for future academic clinicians to start their career and develop a good grounding in clinical research.
Currently the academic component of the job is in the second year (F2 year) which consists of:
- A 4 month academic post
- Based at the University of Bristol with a clinical day release per week at NBT and a 3 week mini block at UHBW for service work
- 2 x 4 month service posts
- University Hospitals Bristol / North Bristol NHS Trust
- Each with a day release for academic work
The training offered allows our SFP doctors to be competitive to obtain Academic Fellowship posts and similar. During the F2 year SFP doctors will have a four month protected block of time to undertake a research project (with 1 day clinical service commitments). In order to maximise the benefit of this project time they will also have 1 day research time in the remaining 8 months of their clinical training to turn the research into outputs.

Protocol for Academic F2s – Clinical Shifts
The protocol below sets out the details of the clinical placement you will undertake during your 4 month Academic post. There will be no additional pay supplement available for Academic posts unless the placement requires Out of Hours (OOH) work. If this is required the OHH scale on the 2016 NHS Employers T&Cs will apply.
Academic Placement
- Academic F2s need to work clinical one day per week whilst in their Academic rotations in order to keep up with their F2 competencies.
- These clinical placements will be within AMU or Surgery at NBT. The number of clinical placements available in these specialties will be confirmed in June prior to starting AF2. Trainees can express which of these attachments they prefer but who will be allocated to which specialty will depend on a number of factors (i.e. number of places available, clinical need, rotations already undertaken) and the final decision on who is placed where will be that of the Foundation Yr 2 Programme Director.
- Swaps to other specialties in or outside the Trust will not be permitted.
- One weekday will be worked per week. Details of day and hours to be worked will be confirmed by the clinical department. Any OOH hours that may be required in this placement will be negotiated with you and paid for direct from the department.
GP Placement
- There are no OOH requirements for this post but you may wish to take up additional locum shifts if available within the Trust. These should not however impact upon the hours required in the GP practice or the work required for Academic projects.
Psychiatry Placement
- Some Psychiatric posts do require OOH work and will be remunerated accordingly.
- In posts that do not have an OOH requirement you may wish to take up additional locum shifts if available within the Trust. These should not however impact upon the hours required in the Psychiatry placement or the work required for Academic projects
Stroke and ITU Placement
- Clinical rotations within Stroke Medicine and ITU will be set according to the needs of the rota. Should OOH be required for these posts then you will be remunerated according.
General information
- During your two clinical placements you will have a day per week protected to continue your academic studies. This day should be arranged in advance with the clinical team and will typically be fixed so that both the clinical and academic teams can plan around your availability. It may be possible to aggregate these days into a block, for example to present a conference or because of an exceptional academic need to complete a study, but this will need to be agreed well in advance with the clinical / foundation teams and will be judged on a case by case basis.
- The dates and times when each academic F2 will work the shifts will be fixed at the beginning (preferably in advance) of each four month block. The Rota Co-ordinator will confirm shifts. You should make contact with the department in advance of your placement to ensure you are aware of which shifts you have been allocated.
- All requests for leave during your clinical placements will be managed by the departmental leave Co-ordinator following the Trust Managing Medical Workforce Absence policy.
- Please ensure that the clinical department have contact phone numbers/e mail addresses for you
- Finally, all rotations, and terms and conditions are subject to change prior to the start of the F2 year due to possible service re-configuration and service needs.

Protocol for Academic Foundation Doctors (2017) – Clinical Shifts
Your Academic F1 year will be the same as any other F1 doctor. The protocol below sets out the hours and banding that Academic F2s will be working throughout the whole of the year. This takes into account the need to undertake your academic research projects alongside your wider educational requirements and service needs of the Trust.

- These clinical placements will be within AMU.

- This will involve:

12 x long days (9.00 – 22.00) on any Mondays –Thursdays
GP Placement/ GUM Placement
- Whilst you are in GP practice you will need to complete your OOH commitment on a twilight shift and weekends:
2 twilight shifts (17.00 – 22.00) during the week
2 x weekends (9.00 – 22.00 Saturday and Sunday)
- The clinical department will be AMU.
Other Clinical Placements
- During other clinical placements (ie medicine/ surgery (T&O)/ psychiatry/ critical care/ paediatrics) will do their on-calls within their own specialty and will be paid a banding of 1b.
General information
These out of hours’ shifts will enable the Trust to pay you a 1B pay banding for the whole year.
Finally, all rotations and banding are subject to change leading up to August 2017. This is due to possible service re-configuration and service need.
During your two clinical placements you will have a day per week protected to continue your academic studies. It may be possible to aggregate these days into a block, for example to present a conference or because of an exceptional academic need to complete a study, but this will need to be agreed well in advance with the clinical / foundation teams and will be judged on a case by case basis.
