The process of ‘revalidation’ was introduced by the GMC. All licensed doctors are required to revalidate every 5 years. The process of revalidation requires doctors to have regular appraisals with their employer based on the core guidance for doctors, Good Medical Practice.
To successfully revalidate you will need to evidence:
- Regular appraisal participation, minimum 4 in the 5-year cycle.
- Adequate CPD to comply with relevant royal college requirements
- Quality Improvement activity
- Job Planning
- Compliance with mandatory Trust training
- Reflection
- 360 degree assessments from colleagues and patients every 5 years
If you’re an SAS doctor working within a trust, your designated body (the organisation that will provide you with a regular appraisal and support you with your revalidation) will be your trust. Your responsible officer (the person who will make a revalidation recommendation about you on behalf of your designated body) will usually be the medical director of your trust.
If you’re an SAS doctor working in the community, you’ll need to ask the General Medical Council (GMC) to tell you who your designated body and responsible officer are.
