South West Foundation Fellows

These roles are designed to support Foundation Doctors who want to develop additional skills and contribute to the wider Foundation School. 

About the Fellowships 

  • The role lasts two years
  • Fellows attend quarterly Foundation School Committee meetings as Foundation Doctor Representatives. 
  • Fellows also meet regularly with their mentor and with the other Fellows. 
  • The roles are voluntary. Foundation Doctors may use Self Development Time (SDT) to complete Fellowship activities. 
  • Applicants must submit a written application (details on the webpage). 

Sustainability Fellow (Available in both Severn and Peninsula Schools) 

Purpose 

To support sustainable practice within the NHS and help embed the SUSQI (Sustainable Quality Improvement) approach. 

Main responsibilities 

  • Deliver SUSQI teaching to F1s and F2s. 
  • Attend a “Teaching SUSQI” course.? 
  • Work with the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare and the Foundation School. 
  • Attend quarterly Foundation School Committee meetings and submit a Foundation Doctor update report. 
  • Be a point of contact for Foundation Doctors providing sustainability-related feedback. 

Current Fellows 

Education Fellow (Available in both Severn and Peninsula Schools) 

Purpose 

To develop and support educational activities across the Foundation School. 

Main responsibilities 

  • Demonstrate interest in medical education and continue developing an education portfolio. 
  • Engage with teaching and supervision opportunities. 
  • Shadow senior educators/ senior fellow(s) if applicable. 
  • Attend quarterly Foundation School Committee meetings and submit an update report. 
  • Lead an educational project that contributes to the Foundation School. 

Current Fellows 

Leadership Fellow (Available in both Severn and Peninsula Schools) 

Purpose 

To support leadership development and contribute to the Foundation School’s strategic work. 

Main responsibilities 

  • Attend quarterly Foundation School Committee meetings and provide an update report. 
  • Demonstrate interest in leadership/management. 
  • Attend the Foundation Doctors Advisory Board (FDAB) meetings twice a year. 
  • Gather and represent the views of Foundation Doctors—not just personal views. 
  • Lead a leadership or management project during the Fellowship. 

Current Fellows 

Simulation Fellow (Available in Severn School only) 

The Simulation Fellow works alongside the Education Fellow and represents Foundation Doctors at key educational meetings. 

Main Responsibilities 

  • Attend the Education Strategy Group meetings twice a year and provide a Foundation Doctor perspective. 
  • Attend the HEE (South West) Simulation Network meetings. 
  • Use IT skills and an interest in education to help develop Simulation Training within the Foundation School. 
  • Lead a simulationrelated project during the Fellowship that supports the development of the Severn Foundation School. 

The Foundation School will support the Fellow’s personal and professional development throughout the role.
