Review Process Following an ARCP Outcome 2
If you receive an ARCP Outcome 2, you have the right to request a review of this decision.
How to request a review
- Requests must be submitted to the Chair of the ARCP panel via email: england.revalidation.sw@nhs.net
- Your request must be made within 10 working days of being notified of the outcome.
- You must complete and attach the Appeal Request Form (available at the bottom of this page).
Supporting evidence
You are required to submit relevant supporting evidence with your request. This will enable the ARCP review panel to consider your case in detail.
Review process
- Wherever possible, the panel will review your case within 15 working days of receiving your request.
- You will receive the outcome of the review in writing within 5 working days of the review taking place.
- In some cases, you may be invited to meet with a senior representative to discuss the panel’s decision in more detail.
Final decision
The decision made by the ARCP review panel following an Outcome 2 is final, and there is no further right of appeal.
Appeals Against ARCP Outcome 3 or 4
If you receive an ARCP Outcome 3 or 4, you have the right to appeal the panel’s decision.
Submitting an appeal request
- Appeals must be submitted in writing to the Postgraduate Dean via:
england.revalidation.sw@nhs.net - Your request must be made within 10 working days of being notified of the decision.
- You must clearly state your grounds for appeal and provide any supporting evidence to enable a full review.
Stage 1: Initial review
The first stage of the appeal process is identical to the review process for an ARCP Outcome 2. Please refer to the section above for further details.
Stage 2: Formal appeal hearing
If the outcome remains unchanged following review, you may request a formal appeal hearing:
- This request must be submitted within 10 working days of receiving the review decision.
- The hearing will normally take place as soon as practicable, and usually within 30 working days of your request.
Appeal panel composition
An independent appeal panel will be convened, comprising:
- Panel Chair – Postgraduate Dean or nominated representative
- College or Faculty Representative (from outside the South West)
- Senior Consultant (same region and specialty as the appellant)
- Senior Consultant (same region, different specialty)
- Senior Postgraduate Doctor (same region, different specialty)
- Patient and Public Voice Partner
The following may also attend (but are not panel members):
- HR Representative (to advise the Chair)
- Administrative support
Note: Members of the original ARCP panel will not take part in the appeal panel.
Preparing for your appeal
You will be required to submit a Statement of Case, outlining:
- Your reasons for appealing the decision
- Reference to any supporting evidence
A representative from the South West will also submit a Statement of Case supporting the original decision.
All documentation will be compiled and shared confidentially with you and the panel at least 5 working days before the hearing.
Please note that panel members will not have advance access to your e-Portfolio, so ensure all relevant evidence is included in your submission.
Outcome of the appeal
- You will receive written confirmation of the panel’s decision within 5 working days of the hearing.
- The Chair may offer to meet with you to explain the decision in more detail, where appropriate.
Final decision
The decision of the appeal panel is final, and there is no further right of appeal.
