What is SPEX?

We are pleased to introduce the Support for Performance and Exams (SPEX) programme. SPEX is a highly successful, evidence‑based programme designed to support GP Registrars to develop consultation skills and achieve success in the MRCGP examinations.

The programme provides targeted support during GP training, focusing on both the Applied Knowledge Test (AKT) and the Simulated Consultation Assessment (SCA), which are required for CCT. Further information on these exams is available on the RCGP website.

SPEX offers a range of support tailored to individual needs, including structured group sessions and, where appropriate, more intensive one-to-one support with experienced educators.

SPEX AKT provides focused support around exam preparation, revision strategies and exam technique, with additional support available for trainees approaching later attempts.

SPEX SCA supports the development of consultation skills through a structured introductory session and a personalised tutorial, including detailed feedback on recorded consultations to support exam readiness.

In addition, SPEX offers small group support for trainees early in GP training, focusing on developing consultation and communication skills where additional support would be beneficial.

For further information on the programme, please see our SPEX FAQs.
